ID card benefits exaggerated shock!
So Tony McNulty, the Home Office minister responsible for the ID project, has admitted that "Perhaps in the past the government, in its enthusiasm, oversold the advantages of identity cards. We did suggest, or at least implied, that they might well be a panacea for identity fraud, for benefit fraud, terrorism, entitlement and access to public services." (BBC article)
Quite.
I am reminded again of Mr DogHorse's lyrics.
By keeping tabs on everyone we make our world a better place
A plastic panacea for the problems of our populace
Thus Britain's streets will once again become a bold utopia
Our freedom will be guaranteed (so long as they know where we are)
I see they're promising to cap the cost of the card as well. I don't understand the logic here, surely anything that isn't paid for by the individual will be paid for by the government and the government gets its money from the individual. Well, thanks guys, knowing that my tax money is paying for it is so much better than having to pay it out of my wallet. Do they think we're idiots?
Oh.

I should try that next time the police pull me over...
Sorry officer, in my enthusiasm I seem to have exceeded the speed limit. Never mind, eh?
