New mayor of London and other stuff

Now it's nothing to do with me but bumbling comedy MP for mayor? Are you sure? Crikey!

Anyhow, on to other things in the form of a quick bookmark spring clean.

The Great Architect, excellent topical satirical images.

A particularly nice doodle from a beautiful revolution.

Some amusing remixes of those awful anti-photographer terrorism posters.

A wonderful machine, jam packed full of silly.

I won a caption competition! A bit of a fraud really, as someone pointed me at it and said "you know what this needs..." but the fish was all mine. A good blog anyhow, and an excellent project.

And a sad farewell to Humph. A very fine musician and fabulously silly man. He will be missed.

All that really matters to a woman...

... is the size of your duck.

Despite the amusement I occasionally experience when I misread a spam subject I've finally decided that I need to move over to a new public eclectech email address as after 7 years online mail@eclectech is getting far too many emails about duck size.

I'll run the old address for a wee while longer, and will set a sensible bounce message to let people know what's happening, but in future please send emails to hello instead of mail at eclectech.co.uk.

Ta.

Do you speak english?

For a change I thought I'd post an old Big Train sketch I stumbled upon at YouTube. I liked the show in general but this was a particular favourite and I was most pleased to be reminded of it.

What a carve up!

Greenpeace have launched a report today, Carving up the Congo.

Mr DogHorse and I have made a shortened, slightly quirkier version if you want to dip your toe into the topic without embarking on the full report.

What a carve up! (700KB Flash).

There's also a video version over at YouTube.

In other news I've started animating palindromes. No reason other than someone suggested 'a dog, a panic in a pagoda' and it seemed like a good idea. So far I've only made 2 (the other is evil olive) but any suggestions of fun palindromes welcomed.

Finally, interesting lecture by Jeffrey Sachs on the radio today (the Reith Lectures), downloadable for the rest of the week from the BBC.

I have a HUGE Humph and a bad pun

The bad pun is, I assume, self evident. This is the responsibility of an email correspondent who has taken to tempting me with things to animate, so blame David H. please.

Is this a UK thing? Ah, yes.

As for the huge Humph, you can see him at the other place, where I'm also asking for opinions on what I should stick into a gallery at Photobloc. Cartoons are currently in the lead. Hooray for Humph!

Stumbled across a lovely gallery of sky photos and some fab drawings that are work a peek, if you've had enough Humph.

Hmm, that wasn't normal service....

It's never nice when a loved one is in hospital, and if they're a few hundred miles away it feels even worse, so I have been away to get closer.

I am back, things are better and I am getting back to normal.

Back soon with some silly, and I hope to manage it this time.

In the meantime, have an appalling joke about teddy bears on a picnic.

Normal service and all that

Life is keeping me off-line at the moment.

There should be a few new things in February but in the meantime have a porkupine and a photo of the two new chicks of my adopted penguin. It has been a good year for penguin chicks in Argentina apparently, so hooray for that!

Back soon with some silly.

The Bill to End all Bills?

Unfortunately I'm not talking about electricity bills here, but rather the exceptionally dull sounding Legislative and Regulatory Reform Bill. Except it's not really very dull. It's actually quite worrying.

In a briefing to clients the Clifford Chance law firm points out that the Bill "usurps the power of Parliament". It gives ministers power to amend, repeal or replace any legislation simply by making an order and without having to bring a Bill before Parliament. Forgive me for my suspicious nature but that seems to be moving us rather further away from a democracy than I'm happy with.

It really doesn't seem to getting the media attention it deserves, but here are a few articles for those of you who can't believe what I'm saying, just pick your source.
BBC | The Times | The Times (letter) | The Guardian | The Telegraph | Bloggers | Parliament

Whilst on my news trawl I also came across this article, suggesting that creationism is taking hold in UK education establishments; it concerns me that we're going to end up with attempts to teach Intelligent Design in science classes as has been happening elsewhere. If you have faith then that should be enough, please don't try and pretend that it's science.

One final link, this story about a trading standards employee having trouble coming to terms with the concept of open source amused me, and reminds me that there are nice things in the world too, even if they are considered abnormal.

Seasonal Smut

Chestnuts roasting by an open fire

Every now and then an idea for an image or animation pops into my head and demands to be made; they're frequently appallingly bad puns, but I find them irresistable. Last week it was a terrible play on catapult. Today it's this. I was roasting chestnuts, singing a festive ditty to myself and this appeared.

I trust you'll understand that's it's for my own mental health that I have to get these things out of my head. I hate to think what would happen if I let them fester.

Late night ramblings

I've been watching a lot of the Dylan material on the BBC recently and have been greatly enjoying it. I have also made something with some of it that made me giggle so I will share it here; Subterranean Bonesick Blues

Here's a version if you're more of a cat person, Subterranean Homesick Mews.

Whilst I'm here I also share these two items. One is an notice that I believe is by a Glaswegian artist although unfortunately I can't remember his name. Anyhow, it tickles me.
Update: Hurrah, got it! His name is David Shigley. I've changed the link so it goes to the version on his site now, definitely worth a mooch about.

The second is the newly launched web space of the lovely Tart Monkey. He has heaps of talent and a mild pope obsession... go and have a peek.

Shockingly bad puns

My only defence is that I think they were both inflicted upon me by Doghorse, and therefore I am simply cleansing my brain by drawing them.

Welcome to Hamsterdam
